Archives For June 2010

I’m excited and honored to be a part of helping Community Bible Church in San Antonio beta test their new Online Church tomorrow night!  CBC is using an incredible platform called Media Social that has fantastic integration with Facebook.  Katie and I experienced the worship service live this morning and are excited to share that experience with everyone we know around the world online tomorrow night!  Pastor Robert Emmitt preached an incredible sermon that you won’t want to miss titled Through the Darkness.  Join us tomorrow night (Monday) at 9pm CST for this incredible worship experience online at www.mediasocial.tv/cbc.  Feel free to invite others to join in on through the Facebook event page.

I’ve been hearing a lot about Google TV and just saw this promo video.  It makes a lot of sense and seems like it’s been a long time coming.   About 6 months ago I just bought a VGA cable to connect my laptop to my TV because I was watching too many shows on my 17′ screen in the same room as my 42″ tv.  I’ve always been interested in  Apple TV (I almost bought one but figured I could do the same thing by connecting my computer to my TV) which seems to be nothing like Google TV and while they seem nothing alike, they are both movements away from traditional cable tv.  It seems that with the speed of the internet now and livestreaming video everywhere, that it’s only a matter of time before cable no longer exists.  I’m sure there will be some slow adapters, but I’m pretty pumped about this option and eager to watch it develop.  What I’m curious to see is how it will work with live shows/videos. I’m a sports fan and still enjoy watching many sporting events live (although watching commercials drives me crazy).  This platform makes a lot of sense for the tv shows that I can watch in an On Demand format, but I’m curious how it will work with live broadcasts online.  It will be interesting to see and looks like this will be a pretty sweet technology addition to the home!

I got a call a couple months ago from a gentleman from Global Media Outreach seeking advice for doing ministry online. After rambling about the iPhone App that I had helped develop and the 300 people who had downloaded it, he went on to share about the 1,000,000 people that they had reached in the past year through Global Media Outreach. I was overwhelmed and inspired. I still am. Global Media Outreach is simply using the power of Google and other search engines along with very simple websites to reach millions! While I was on the phone with the gentleman from Global Media Outreach he encouraged me to go to http://www.greatcommission2020.com/ and just watch while we were talking. You can visibly see who is going to the various websites around the world and whether they make a decision to receive Christ. It is a powerful movement of the gospel in our world! The structure that they have created is incredible with training where you can become an online missionary and giving where for every dollar you give, the gospel is shared with 10 people online. After you check out the website, I greatly encourage you to get your church connected to this ministry through their Online Missions Program.  It will be exciting to see how God uses this incredible ministry and how we might all partner together as ONE online furthering the gospel message to the world.

I’m not a musician, but I’m continually amazed at what my iPhone is capable of and the new iPhone4 is going to go do new levels!  Watch the video, enjoy, and if you play guitar I would jump all over this!  Ridiculous!

Digital Missions

June 16, 2010 — 1 Comment

I know almost half of my posts are about LifeChurch.tv, but the reality is that they are leading the way in the areas of ministry that I am so passionate about.  I was checking out their new website and was fascinate by the first “Cause” that they highlighted as part of their Missions: “Digital Missions“.  They explained that at a cost of about 6 cents per person touched they reached 1,286, 893 people through Church Online, You Version, and OPEN resources. Here is what they say about Digital Missions:

“God has led us to leverage every technology tool without our grasp to spread His truth and love.”

This is extremely outside of the box for most of us, but the reality is that LifeChurch.tv is reaching millions because on mission where no one else was: online.  Many others are now following and millions more need to be and will be reached through “Digital Missions”.

I’ve wanted the iPad since I first saw it announced.  I go out of my way to find an excuse to drop into Best Buy or the Apple Store just to fiddle around on it for a little bit when I get a chance.  The problem is that I’m cheap and need a good reason to buy one other than thinking that it’s really cool.  Trust me, I’ve worked on good reasons, but haven’t found one to justify the cost yet.  It’s an incredible machine and I think I will really like the iBook feature, but that’s not enough at this point.  The truth is, I’m planning to be that guy that waits in line to be one of the first to buy the new iPhone.  The advances with multitasking, an HD-Video camera, a camera on the front for video-chat, and the many other advances make this purchase a no-brainer and well worth the investment.  I’d love for you to give me a good reason to buy the iPad, but for now my Macbook Pro and  the new iPhone seem to meet all of my needs and so much more!

Over the past year or so I began hearing about a worship band in town called Sweet 180. I later received info about this year’s Super Summer events and saw that they are on the lineup as one of the main worship bands. What really caught my attention though was running into Lucas Barrientes (accoustic guitar/vocals) in the parking lot at Trinity Baptist Church where I first began to hear the heart of the band. Lucas and Sweet 180 have a passionate heart for worship and impacting teenagers and young adults through the powerful message behind their music. I got to hear their music live for the first time at Praise Wave at Sea World where they opened up for Steven Curtis Chapman. Their song Hallelujah, Awesome God (which you can hear on their MySpace) has been stuck in my head since. I encourage you to get very familiar with this band and if you’re in the Texas area and need a worship band, they would be one of the first I would call (if David Gregory is already booked).

After visiting Charlotte ONE a couple months ago, David Hickman (Director of Charlotte ONE), encouraged me to read this book by Vernon Johnson. ONE LORD ONE FAITH is very different from most of the books I read, but probably one of the most spiritually challenging and inspiring books I’ve ever read. The first chapter or two is a little slow and hard to follow, but keep reading because it gets good! This book gets to the core prayer of Jesus in John 17:23 that is the basis for Charlotte ONE and has stirred in my heart since reading this book. Jesus prayed that we may become ONE so that the world will know how much God loves them. As we look at our churches it is clear to see the division and the competitive nature that we have developed. This couldn’t be further from the heart of Christ! May we be the answer to Jesus prayer seeking unity in the body so that the world will know through our being ONE how much God loves them!

This morning I worshiped God online with LifeChurch.tv as part of their ONE prayer.  There were so many things that were incredibly powerful about this experience this morning, but nothing blew me away more than seeing the red dots above of all of those who I was worshiping with from all over the world!  There were people from 38 different countries with hundreds from all over the US!  Something they did this morning was communion online, it was powerful to experience this sacrament with hundreds from all over the world!  It was also a nice bonus that Brian Houston from Hillsong was preaching this morning.  I’m eager to continue to worship with LifeChurch.tv along with the thousands of other churches around the world through ONE Prayer over the next couple of weeks!

Listening to the 8-Bit podcast yesterday, I heard a clip from this video.  I heard a little bit about Zac Smith’s story through Twitter and from various friends, but watching this video brought a whole new understanding.  Zac was on staff at NewSpring Church in Anderson, SC when he found out he had cancer.  I’ll let his words speak for themselves, but his perspective in his final days on this earth are deeply convicting.  He has a line at the end of the video where he states that if God heals him or if He doesn’t that “God is still God, and God is still good.”  God is God and God is good!  Zac Smith went to be with the Lord on May 16,2010.
