One of the first questions I hear when I share with people about The Social Media Guide for Ministry is where did I get the idea for the book? Honestly, I never planned on writing a book and simply wanted to create a resource to help ministries maximize Social Media in their context. Over the past couple of years I have continued to receive emails and calls from many ministries asking all kinds of questions regarding Social Media in MInistry. Some of the questions are very basic and some were much more complex. Some questioned the value and some questioned theology of doing Online Church via Social Media.
The most frequent question I heard was: where do we start? Many ministry leaders have ignored Social Media over the past few years thinking it was only for a younger generation realizing now that it cannot be ignored and actually provides great ministry opportunities. The hardes thing to do is just getting started and knowing where to begin when you hear about Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, MySpace, Wordpress, Flickr, Pinterest, and on and on.
While there is no definitive answer to this question I sought to really lay out some practical first steps in first understanding Social Media as a whole and laying out some very basic action steps in getting started. I also wanted to clearly communicate some mistakes that I have made along the way so that new users of Social Media can avoid these when jumping in.
The idea for this book simply came from a felt need that I was hearing from others in ministry. Honestly, writing this book came from a lack of time as I became unable to respond to every email, phone call, or request for help. I thought I could created a simple document that could meet most of these needs. One of my favorite things to do has always been working with and encouraging other ministries. My hope was simply to create a resource that could meet this need with far more ministry leaders that I could ever help through personal phone calls and emails.
I honestly never dreamed when putting this resource together that it would lead to being a published book with the great people at Group Publishing. I cannot wait for it to release and my prayer is that it will be a great resource for thousands of ministry leaders to really dig into Social Media and the opportunities that we have for meaningful ministry online.
