You likely received an email like I did from Facebook with the above message. I generally ignore these things, but lawsuits are serious and several people (including my wife) asked me about this and whether it's legit. Several people asking doesn't always get me to pursue something, but my wife pretty much always does. Anyways, I quickly did some research (I Googled it) and here's what I found:
- It's a very real lawsuit and you're likely entitled to a settlement
- If all goes through (and it looks likely to) you could receive .. wait for it... up to $10! That's right (up to) 10 bucks.
- If too many people fill it out all of the money will go directly to charity (what I hope will happen)
Here's my take on the situation:
Facebook made a mistake and they're paying for it. One of my major annoyances on Social Media though are people who complain about Social Media on Social Networks (primarily Facebook). Facebook provides a free service and even in their financial generating ad campaigns they have developed a system that is genuinely better for the end user than the advertiser spending the money. They care about you and your experience on the network.
I'm a big fan of Facebook and believe that they genuinely strive to create the best user experience for their 1 billion + active users and privacy/security is very important to them. They have made mistakes and will make more mistakes. I would rather see them spend $10 million dollars on development to fix these mistakes though, rather than $10 to each of their users who use the free service that they provide.
These are my thoughts, what are yours?
In case you're curious what I plan to do, I'm choosing the last option seen at the bottom of the email:
