Last weekend Katie and I went to see The Social Network. I don't watch many movies as it is hard for me to sit still for 2 hours. It was a great night out though with Katie as well as a movie well worth seeing. There are many things about the movie describing the creation and evolution of Facebook that both reminded me of how my life has tranformed over the past 10 years as well as inspiring me for what I believe is ahead for the next 10 years.
Can you believe that Facebook has only been in existence for 6 years? It's crazy to think how 1 somewhat simple idea can transform culture. Do you not think Facebook has transformed culture? 500 million users and growing world wide! My guess is that you spend more time on Facebook than any other website and if you have an iPhone you use your Facebook app more than any other app. It's a phenomenon that most of us could not have imagined 5 years ago and probably would have laughed at the idea.
One of the lines from the movie that caught my attention was from the President of Harvard. He said: "Harvard graduates don't find jobs, they create them." That's a good line isn't it. How did you get your job today? Did you find it or did you create it?
As most of you know, I became the Social Media Pastor at Community Bible Church about 3 months ago. I get this question often: "What is a Social Media Pastor and how did you become one?" I cannot say that I found the job or that I created it either. God opened a door and I walked through it. Over the next couple of weeks, I will begin telling this story. In telling my story I will be telling God's story of how He is using my passions to maximize a website created in a Harvard dorm room to Reach, Teach, and Help people in Jesus' name all over the world!
My hope is that my story and experiences might also inspire you to also use these incredible tools that are available to us to make a difference in our world. If you haven't already seen The Social Network, I greatly encourage you to.
