Many social media experts are predicting Snapchat to be the social network of 2016. It’s not surprising why as you take a look at the following facts about this fast growing social network:

1.     Snapchat has 100 million active users with 400m snaps sent every day
2.     Snapchat’s core users are 13-24 year-olds
3.     70% of its users are female, versus 30% male
4.     It ranks fourth among the top social media sharing site
5.     77% of college students use the app
6.     50% of college students use the app as a means of communication
7.     Only 1% of advertisers are currently using Snapchat
8.     Brands are charged $750,000 per day to advertise on Snapchat
9.     In addition, Snapchat Stories, a way to view a user’s collection for longer than a few seconds, are being viewed 500 million times a day.
10.   50% of Snapchat users are below the age of 18, followed by 31% within the 18-24 bracket and just 19% above the age of 25.

So, what does all of this mean? Well, this quirky little social network for teenagers doesn’t seem to be going away anytime soon and everyone is beginning to pay attention. It’s time to figure it out if you want to reach and engage teenagers and young adults.

2 years ago at a conference I said that I don’t see any redeemable value in Snapchat. I was wrong. The good news is that there are tremendous ministry opportunities if you are ready to be creative and build relationships. It’s confusing, slow and unlike anything else. 1.     Total number of people who use YouTube – 1,300,000,000.
2.     300 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute!
3.     Almost 5 billion videos are watched on Youtube every single day.
4.     The total number of hours of video watched on YouTube each month – 900 million.
5.     80% of YouTube’s views are from outside of the U.S.
6.     The average number of mobile YouTube video views per day is 1,000,000,000.
7.     Mobile Youtube users spent 40 minutes on average session, up more than 50% year-over-year
8.   YouTube overall and even YouTube on mobile alone reaches more 18-34 and 18-49 year-olds than any cable network in the U.S.

What does all of this mean? Well, if you have the ability to make videos that engage people, you have a very large active audience on YouTube that is available for FREE! With smartphones and mobile video editors anyone anywhere can create high quality videos that can engage.  We’re living in such a unique time in history where the world is more connected than ever before.

Twitter was one of the first social networks to come on to the scene many years ago and continues to be a force.  As you consider your investment in this social network I want you to think about the following facts:

1.     Twitter has 316 million monthly active users.

2.     500 million tweets are sent per day.

3.     77% of Twitter accounts exist outside the U.S.

4.     The platform supports over 35 languages.

5.     23% of all online adults use Twitter (a proportion identical to the 23% of online adults who did so in September 2014).

6.     Internet users living in urban areas are more likely than their suburban or rural counterparts to use Twitter. Three-in-ten online urban residents use the site, compared with 21% of suburbanites and 15% of those living in rural areas.

7.     Twitter is more popular among younger adults — 30% of online adults under 50 use Twitter, compared with 11% of online adults ages 50 and older.

8.     In 2013, the number of active smartphone Twitter users in the United States was 30.8 million and is projected to amount to 56.5 million in 2018.

So, what does all of this mean?  Well, Twitter is HUGE and there are millions of people globally actively engaging in this social network every day. From a simple and direct perspective if you are in an urban context and desire to engage a younger audience (under 50 years old) Twitter is a great platform and you will engage much better using tweets with images.

While this sounds simple, it really is much more complex. You must first decide whether you are going to focus energies on this platform and then figure out how you maximize your time investment to most effectively engage. Instagram exploded in 2015 and continues to grow rapidly every day! Here are 15 interesting facts about this fast growing social network that I think might catch your attention:

1.     Instagram currently has 300 million monthly active users.

2.     75 million of those use Instagram every day.

3.     30% of teenagers consider Instagram the most important social network. 9% of teenage girls claim to have been bullied on Instagram.

4.     20% of US adult females use Instagram, compared to 15% of US adult men.

5.     20% of Internet users aged between 16 and 64 have an Instagram account.

6.     41% of Instagram's audience are aged between 16 and 24.

7.     22% of internet users in the Middle East and North Africa use Instagram.

8.     47% of adult users access Instagram from a smartphone. 53% use a tablet.

9.     Instagram launched in October 2010. Over 20 billion photographs have been shared on the site since then. 70 million new photos are shared each day.

10.   There are around 2.5 billion Instagram likes every day, or 8500 new likes each second. 1000 comments are left each second.

The demographics though are fast changing as the platform is getting mass adoption by all adults and on a global scale.
