Archives For Ministry

In preparing for the Virtual Book Tour one of the first recommendations someone gave me was to partner with other organizations that you believe in and who believe in you to help get the word out.  Following this recommendation the first contact I made was to William Vanderbloemen of  Vanderbloemen Search Group.  It was less than 15 minutes later that William responded and the ball was rolling forward.

William has become a good friend and I love the work that he and the team at Vanderbloemen Search Group are doing for the Kingdom.  In my short ministry career I have made several good and not so good hiring decisions.  I have also been a part of churches who have made some good, but far more poor hiring decisions.  Hiring is complicated in any organization and I believe it is even more complicated in the life of the church, especially in executive level roles.  Hiring is actually the easy part though, it’s dealing with a bad hire that gets far more complicated.

Vanderbloemen Search Group has an incredible team of experts with a vast network that can come alongside your church and help you seamlessly make the best decision possible in filling critical leadership roles.  Take a look at this video:

Even if you are not looking to hire or looking for change, I highly recommend staying connected to Vanderbloemen Search Group online as they are always putting out great articles and resources for ministry leaders.  Here’s where you can connect with them online:

One Last Thing:

I have heard William say many times that has stuck with me is this: churches often hire too fast and fire too slow.  As I look back on my experience this statement rings true many times over.  I’m grateful for his leadership and expertise!

Questions from Rebecca:

How do I make the church’s website more relevant…more likely to draw people in?

Do you have a good set of questions that have started good conversations?  Our church has a FaceBook page already.  We are in the process of transformation…

My Response:

Great questions Rebecca!

First, on the website I recommend 3 things: a good design, a simple structure, and clear communication.  You need your website to look good and make a great first impression.  The site needs to be easy to navigate and communicate clearly what you want the visitor to see/read.  The biggest mistake that I see churches making on websites is not having services times and location on the front page.  This is the primary thing that most visitors to a website are searching for.  Make this clear and easy to find (and appealing to attend).

On the conversation starters I recommend starting casual and then going deep.  Here are some good ones that we have found:

Casual: What’s the best burger in town? or What football team are you cheering on this weekend?

Personal: What one person has impacted your life more than anyone else?  or What is your favorite childhood memory?

Spiritual: Type 1 word to describe God  or  How can we pray for you today?

I would lean on the Spiritual, but don’t hesitate to start casual and then get personal.  I don’t think you can ask too many questions on Facebook!

Question from Kathy:
How do you handle security – maybe its my generation but I am so worried about posting things that would make an event open to people who could do harm. I work with kids ministry and I stay far away from posting anything regarding kids events – is there ways around this?
My Response:
Great question, Kathy!  I’m not sure that there’s a one size fits all solution when it comes to security, but I think it’s important to let our light shine bright while also being smart in what we post, where we post, and when we post.  When it comes to Kids Ministry it is important for people to know that you have a great kids ministry, but you must be careful when posting pictures of kids and various events.  One of the great features that Facebook has is targeting of posts where you can specify based on age, gender, and location to who you would like to see a post.  This would be a great opportunity to use this functionality.  Basically, be careful, but not fearful as your community needs to know about all of the great things that God is doing in and through your church!

Question from Scott:

We do hometeams (small groups that go through discussion questions and talk about life) We are looking for a way to reach the young adult age, especially those with children. The biggest barrier seems to be childcare and sports teams. As I was watching todays session I got to thinking about the possiblity of doing an online Skype type, webcam driven, home team. Is Skype the only resource out there for something like this? Especially one that would be free!

My Response:

Scott, I love your vision for seeing the opportunities.  We began doing Online LifeGroups at Community Bible Church about 2 years ago for the same reason.  Not only does it overcome schedules, but it also overcomes geographic barriers as anyone anywhere can participate.  Honestly, as good as the technology is nothing beats face to face when it comes to small groups.  At the same time, it is just not realistic for many people and online groups provide a great option!  Here are some of the avenues that I would recommend:

Google+ Hangouts- for video chat groups of 5-9 people.

Media Social- for video based groups where you can watch a video and chat via Facebook.

Facebook Groups- for groups that don’t actually meet at a designated time, but have ongoing dialogue 24/7.

Would love to hear other ideas, thoughts, or further questions!

A few weeks ago I was telling someone about a new book that just came out called Going Social.  Their immediate question was, “Are you disappointed that your book wasn’t released first?”  I answered quickly and honestly: “Yes.”  Later that day I downloaded the book and as I began to read it conviction quickly soaked in.

Going Social is a very good book and a great resource for the ministry leaders.  While the book discusses many of the same things that my coming book does, it is still very different and will help probably some of the same people, but most likely engage very different audiences.  I’m very competitive by nature, but my passion is genuinely for collaboration and unity in the body.

I wrote The Social Media Guide for Ministry simply to encourage and help ministry leaders to maximize Social Media for Ministry.  That is my goal.  I also believe that the more people speaking into ministry leaders about this topic, the better.  Other bloggers and authors are not my competition, they are my partners with a common goal.  I’m so excited about what they are doing and I hope you will check out their resources as well.

Here are 3 books for ministry leaders from fellow partners in ministry:

1) Going Social by Terrace Crawford- I downloaded this book on my iPad and have skimmed, but not yet fully read.  It looks to be a thorough book on Social Media for Ministry and well written and laid out.  It also includes a chapter from my friend Sean Cannell on maximizing YouTube for Ministry.  Terrace is a Youth Pastor that has been and still is actively using Social Media in Youth Ministry and shares from his personal experience.

2) The iChurch Method by Jason Caston- this is a personaly favorite of mine.  I’ve actually read it twice as Jason packed this book with a practical system for any sized ministry to maximize web tools.  It includes simple and practical steps for a new user of Social Media and web technology as well as complex systems and even HTML code for you to use.  While this book goes beyond just Social Media, I can’t recommend this book enough.  I also must add that Jason has become a good friend and someone I look forward to locking arms with in pioneering new technologies with in the future.

3) Social Media and Ministry by Rev. Dr Kenneth Lilliard- I honestly have not read this book, nor am I familiar with the author.  In searching for other resources though, this is the first that pulled up and seems to have a similar message of maximizing Social Media for  Gospel spreading purposes.  I would love for you to check it out and let us know what you think.

If there are other resources I have missed, I would love for you to share them in the comments.  This is an exciting time for ministry leaders as the world through social media is more connected than ever creating incredible gospel opportunities.  The challenge becomes understanding how to best utilize these incredible tools for ministry purposes.  Technology is changing fast and so must our methods in utlizing them with a critical need for innovative ministry leaders.  I’m grateful for these and so many other partners in ministry and the many people who are creating incredible resources to support ministry leaders in this way.  I’m honored to be a part of this exciting conversation!

I’m continually humbled by the doors God continues to open in ministry and the great leaders I’m privileged to serve alongside.  I cannot be more excited to announce that I have most recently come alongside Nick Vujicic and the ministry team at Life Without Limbs as a consultant and adviser.

My primary focus as the WebPastor at Community Bible Church will not change and the leadership at my church has been so generous and flexible to allow me opportunities such as these to take my learnings from Online Church and use them to invest in other ministries as well.  I will be working with Life Without Limbs alongside my good friends at PlainJoe Studios and iGivings in development of a new website, launch of a mobile app, Social Media strategy, and all things Online Ministry.  I look forward to sharing with you my experiences in this role and all of my learnings along the way.

If you’re not already familiar with Nick Vujicic and Life Without Limbs take a look at this video:

By the way, Nick just released his new book Unstoppable that recently made the New York Times bestseller list.  Get your copy now!

Looking Forward to 2013

December 31, 2012 — Leave a comment

As I look forward to 2013, there are so many things that I look forward to!  Here are the first that come to mind:

- Launch of the CBC Mobile App with iGivings

- Release of Social Media Guide for Ministry with Group

- Development of CommunityBible.com with Plain Joe Studios

- Expansion of Online Church with WebMinistry Team at CBC

- Leading App Session at All Access Conference

- Online Ministry Development for Life Without Limbs

As I look at this list of things that I’m excited about, it is often who I am/will be working with that gets me excited as what I will be doing.  I feel so blessed about the people God has allowed me to work alongside and feel so privileged to not just work with some of the most qualified people, but all are incredibly godly leaders as well.  It’s going to be a good year!  As I know I will learn so much through these new experiences, I cannot wait to share them with you all and learn from you as well.

Bring on 2013!

Celebrating 2012

December 30, 2012 — Leave a comment

2012 was a great year for me personally.  I have a tendency to constantly look ahead and miss looking back and celebrating all that God has done.  Trust me, I’m looking ahead, but I do want to take a moment to celebrate some personal highlights of 2012:

- Katie and I had our second daughter, Shelby

- My leadership at CBC was expanded joining the Executive Team as WebPastor

- Writing the Social Media Guide for Ministry and signing publishing contract with Group

- Consulting Opportunties with LifeWithout Limbs, St. Stephen Church, Japhet Builders, and several other great organizations

- Online Church Facebook Page reaching the milestone of 250,000 Facebook Likes

As I look at these highlights, I know that several came only by the favor of God in these situations and many also came with time sacrifices and lots of hard work.  There are so many great people involved in each of these, but there are 3 relationships in particular that I want to express my gratitude for in 2012:

1) My wife, Katie.  Katie is my biggest cheerleader and has encouraged me greatly throughout the journey.  Katie has remained flexible with the time sacrifices this year that we have needed to make and patient with the many late nights of 2012 due to a new baby and a new book.  I married way over my head and am so grateful for such an incredible wife!

2)  My boss, Chris.  Chris is the greatest leader I have ever had the privilege to serve under.  He does not just empower me to risk and try new things but challenges me to do so on a daily basis.  The past 2 and a half years have been incredible and my prayer is that God allows us many more years of locking arms together in ministry.  Chris is not just a good boss, but a great friend to me and my family.

3) My mentor, Trey.  Trey has taught me more than I can begin to describe about technology, leadership, innovation, and ministry.  Trey thinks differently than anyone that I have ever been around, which has helped me to grow more than I can explain.  Much of what I write about on this blog comes from core principles that I have learned from Trey.  His encouragement and belief in me has meant so much to these highlights in 2012.

Thank you Jesus for all of your many blessings that came in 2012!  I am blessed beyond belief.
