Resource Suggestions

I’m pumped up right now about rightnow Media and the feature I am most excited about is the Customizable Training Library.  I have researched for a couple years now how to create a similar platform and to be honest it is too complicated and expensive for me to do on my own.  Luckily rightnow Media made this investment and is making it available to thousands of churches.

Not only is the technology available, flexible, and customizable; but it’s affordable!  It also can integrate a vast collection of training videos already created so you don’t have to create video materials or seek out permission to use others.  This is a plug and play system that is ready to go!  Take a look at this video:

What do you think?  Can your church use this tool?

I can’t wait to begin using it for not only new leader training, but ongoing training for our entire team!  This is a tool that I think we will begin using for 2 or 3 things and in the process begin finding 10-12 other uses for it.  I love tools that make you more effective and efficient at the same time!  This tool does just that if used right!

I can’t be more excited about rightNow Media and how much it is going to enhance our ministry at Community Bible Church.  One of the lesser known resources of the package is the Leadership Events Library.

I’m a learner and love attending conferences, but am not able to do so for 2 primary reasons: time and money.  It’s challenging to take the time away and justify the cost of the event and travel.  With rightnow Media’s Leadership Events Library you and your entire team can now experience conferences like Catalyst, Echo, Verge, and so many more without leaving your church or even your home.  Take a look at this video:

What do you think about this resource?  Do you think you and your team would take advantage of this tool?

I’m thinking about having a video of the week for my team to watch and discuss at our weekly team meeting.  I would love to hear your thoughts and ideas!  I’m pretty excited!

For about a year I have been monitoring rightnow Media’s Bible Study Library resource, but didn’t feel like it was the right time to jump in until now.  To be honest, I waited too long.  I should have jumped in a year ago and would have saved our church financially locking in the price from a year ago and gotten this tool in the hands of our congregation even sooner.  Other than waiting too long, I have no regrets about jumping into rightnow Media’s Bible Study library and can’t be more excited!

About a month ago we began pursuing this option pretty seriously and launched it to our congregation just this past week.  Generally when I release a new technology like this I get nervous about all of the email of technical difficulties and such.  My email did blow up this week, but with very few technical requests.  My email box was filled with thank you messages from congregants thrilled about this new tool.  Before I share more about what I love about the Bible Study Library, take a look at this video:

What an incredible tool rightnow has created for the church and at an affordable rate for EVERY church ( take a look at their pricing guide here)!  Here are some of the things that I really love about this resource:

  • Affordable- I don’t know how much your church spends on curriculum, but this tool is not only affordable but will save us money immediately on curriculum expenses.
  • Quality Content- with 2,000+ videos in this library it is packed with quality content from a variety of great publishers.  We actually found that about 80% of our current dvd curriculum library that we have in our library at CBC are included in this video library.
  • Best Tech- the church often is behind when it comes to technology, but this tool truly utilizes the best in technology making videos available to everyone whether they are using a smart phone, tablet, laptop, desktop, or connected tv device.  It’s awesome!
  • Availability- getting curriculum in the hands of our members can be very complicated and difficult for us and for them.  This tool truly makes these video resources available to our entire congregation both locally and globally at their convenience (and ours)!
  • Ease of Use- almost everyone is used to Netflix and using this similar model makes it easy for just about everyone to use!
  • The People- as we researched this product and fell in love with it, we found that the people behind the product are even better than the product itself.  Steve Solstad and the others at rightnow are truly the best and passionate about resourcing the church!
If you haven’t yet checked out rightnow Media, I hope you won’t wait any longer.

A few weeks ago I was telling someone about a new book that just came out called Going Social.  Their immediate question was, “Are you disappointed that your book wasn’t released first?”  I answered quickly and honestly: “Yes.”  Later that day I downloaded the book and as I began to read it conviction quickly soaked in.

Going Social is a very good book and a great resource for the ministry leaders.  While the book discusses many of the same things that my coming book does, it is still very different and will help probably some of the same people, but most likely engage very different audiences.  I’m very competitive by nature, but my passion is genuinely for collaboration and unity in the body.

I wrote The Social Media Guide for Ministry simply to encourage and help ministry leaders to maximize Social Media for Ministry.  That is my goal.  I also believe that the more people speaking into ministry leaders about this topic, the better.  Other bloggers and authors are not my competition, they are my partners with a common goal.  I’m so excited about what they are doing and I hope you will check out their resources as well.

Here are 3 books for ministry leaders from fellow partners in ministry:

1) Going Social by Terrace Crawford- I downloaded this book on my iPad and have skimmed, but not yet fully read.  It looks to be a thorough book on Social Media for Ministry and well written and laid out.  It also includes a chapter from my friend Sean Cannell on maximizing YouTube for Ministry.  Terrace is a Youth Pastor that has been and still is actively using Social Media in Youth Ministry and shares from his personal experience.

2) The iChurch Method by Jason Caston- this is a personaly favorite of mine.  I’ve actually read it twice as Jason packed this book with a practical system for any sized ministry to maximize web tools.  It includes simple and practical steps for a new user of Social Media and web technology as well as complex systems and even HTML code for you to use.  While this book goes beyond just Social Media, I can’t recommend this book enough.  I also must add that Jason has become a good friend and someone I look forward to locking arms with in pioneering new technologies with in the future.

3) Social Media and Ministry by Rev. Dr Kenneth Lilliard- I honestly have not read this book, nor am I familiar with the author.  In searching for other resources though, this is the first that pulled up and seems to have a similar message of maximizing Social Media for  Gospel spreading purposes.  I would love for you to check it out and let us know what you think.

If there are other resources I have missed, I would love for you to share them in the comments.  This is an exciting time for ministry leaders as the world through social media is more connected than ever creating incredible gospel opportunities.  The challenge becomes understanding how to best utilize these incredible tools for ministry purposes.  Technology is changing fast and so must our methods in utlizing them with a critical need for innovative ministry leaders.  I’m grateful for these and so many other partners in ministry and the many people who are creating incredible resources to support ministry leaders in this way.  I’m honored to be a part of this exciting conversation!

Where I’m Learning

December 8, 2012 — Leave a comment

I believe strongly that leaders are learners.  We all learn in many ways both from experience as well as from other leaders and innovators via many different platforms.  I receive the question often of where I am learning and ask it even more.  I will likely make this a monthly post and look forward to hearing your responses as well.  Here are some of the key places I go to learn currently:

Books

Deep and Wide by Andy Stanley

Platform by Michael Hyatt

The iChurch Method by Jason Caston

Magazines:

Fast Company

Outreach

Church Executive

Blogs:

Michael Hyatt

Mashable

Ed Stetzer

Podcasts:

Andy Stanley Leadership Podcast

Social Media Church with DJ Chuang

Catalyst Podcast

So where are you going to learn and grow as a leader? Any of these same places? I would love to know!

So it’s not a big secret that I’m a big fan of Peter McGowan and Plain Joe Studios as well as the guys with Think International. Think International just released a series of videos with Peter McGowan from their Creative Leadership Tour and I couldn’t be more excited to share them with you. Here is my favorite and below are links to several of the other videos in the series:

Like most parents I am paranoid of the Internet when it comes to my daughters.  I know how real the dangers are online and how easily and accidentally you can end up in the wrong place.

My 3 year old already has mastered navigating my iPad and luckily does not know how to punch in my iTunes password or she would have already purchased far too many in App purchases.  While we monitor her use closely, I know this will become an even greater challenge in the years to come.

I want to share 2 great resources that will help you in protecting your family when they go online:

1) XXX Church Parents Blog- this blog is full of great information and conversations to make you aware of all that is going on in the internet.  As horrible as much of this information is and we almost want to look away, it’s important to be informed and aware of what is out there and how to protect your family from it.

2) Safe Eyes Internet Filter- this software really puts you in control on what is blocked and makes you aware of all that is viewed.  You can control time everything from what can be viewed and even how long your kids spend online. This really is the best software out there both for Mac and PC as well as most mobile devices.

What else have you used/found to protect your family online?  What rules/limitations have you put in place for your kids when it comes to their activity online?

A couple months ago at CBC Online we were looking for a simple LifeGroup Finder for our LifeGroups Online and could not find an affordable solution that would work for us.  I went through the popular solutions out there and they honestly did too much and definitely costed too much.  We needed a simple solution and Church Web Tools proved to be the perfect fit.

I randomly came across Church Web Tools through a Google search and when testing it quickly became a fan.  It’s a simple, very affordable, and fairly flexible solution.  The finder is easily embedded as a Facebook App or can also easily be added to your site as a Shadowbox pop out.  One feature that we are not able to use that is very cool is the map functionality so that people can find a physical group near their home.

Since adding the LifeGroup App to CBC Online, I’m looking to add the Prayer Request module next.  It’s actually their featured Application, but we wanted to try out the LifeGroup Finder first.

If you’re looking for a solution for either a LifeGroup finder or Prayer Request module, I highly recommend you checking out Church Web Tools.  The guys are fantastic to work with and you won’t be disappointed with their product.
