Who needs TRL anymore to hear see your favorite Music Video? ADELE’s newest release, Skyfall, has been viewed by over 17 million in the first 3 days via this YouTube video. Social Media changes everything as the music industry quickly learned many years ago thanks to MySpace.
While at the Echo Conference last week, I attended a breakout session with Chance Mason, founder and president of 316 Networks. You can get to know Chance better on Twitter by following him at http://twitter.com/chancemason. While we don’t currently use 316 Networks at CBC, they will be an organization to watch as they have been and will continue to be on the cutting edge of digital media. The session that Chance led was called Leveraging Digital Media for Bigger Impact and Greater Reach, here are the notes I took:
The desire for GROWTH is the bottom-line for every ministry.
The new media ecosystem:
- Social Networking- Introduction (Millions)
- Web Content and Name Acquisition- Engagement (thousands)
- Audience Segmentation- Conversation (Hundreds)
- Targeted Messaging- Participation (1 on 1)
- Feedback- Interaction
Social Networking-
- Choose what you can handle (don’t spread yourself too thin with too much)
- Have a plan for social media sharing (share only valuable information)
- Post with the intention of driving traffic to your website
Social Networking- why do people follow you?
- To let people know what products I support
- To receive coupons and discount offers
- To stay current on available new products
- To learn about the company/organization
- To meet with people who have interests similar to mine
Web name acquisition
-Your website is not just for information; it is the beginning of your engagement with your site viewers
- The use of video is key to connecting, re-engagement, and viral communication
- Name acquisition is a key function of your site
- Your ability to engage with your audience and effectively build relationships with them is key to ministry growth
Audience Segmentation
-DATA is key
- The more you know, the more effectively you’ll be able to communicate
- Information management is essential
Targeted Messaging
- Develop e-communication that is relevant to a specific audience segment
- Proven to increase response rates by at least 300%
- Direct your audience to landing pages/micro sites to measure response
- Incorporate triggered dialogues into your communication based on specific responses
Feedback
- Through triggered dialogue and viral strategies, your desire should be that your audience communicates with you and their friends through social media
- Use user-generated content widgets to make sharing easy
Online Video
- Predicted that 95% of online content will be video by 2015
- 7 out of 10 adults have used the internet to watch or download video
- 54% of mobile users have sent a video, 20% have viewed a video, and 15% have posed a video online through their mobile device
There’s so much to take in from these notes, so I won’t follow up with much. As he ended with some statistics, my attention has been captivated by the idea that 95% of all online content will be video by 2015. This is HUGE!
What does this mean for churches and the future of online ministry? Do you think this is a realistic guess for the future of the web?

I’m always fascinated to see what new Apps come out on the iPhone. It seems more and more are video/tv/movie related. Hulu has a great new app where you can watch pretty much any tv show that you want to watch. Netflix is coming out with their App where you will be able to stream any of their movies that they have available online. One of my favorites is my MLB app where I can watch almost any baseball game live and can get highlight videos almost immediately. YouTube really got it started on the iPhone, but so much more has come and is coming! One of the most exciting things is not the videos that you will download or stream, but that you can create! I’m currently working on a little video of Emery’s first year that I’m creating completely on my new iPhone4. I still love my 42″ flatscreen at home, but my 3″ flatscreen in my pocket isn’t bad either!
I have to admit, I’m a LifeChurch.tv junkie. I’m costantly blown away be the resources they put out there for FREE! I’ve used their Youth Ministry videos, small group materials, and daily use the YouVersion iPhone App. I just heard about a new set of resources they are putting out on VideoTeaching.com. This is simply a website with downloadable video messages from some of the best communicators of the gospel from around the world! Can you imagine needing to be out one Sunday or having lost your voice and your fill-in for the day is Andy Stanley, Craig Groeschel, or Mark Driscoll? Pretty good back up plan… and it’s FREE! Actually, I wouldn’t consider this a back up plan, but I would filter through these messages and find some opportunities for your congregation to experience the teachings of some of these great pastors on a regular basis. I look forward to seeing what pastors/speakers are added to this list in the future and how this FREE resource like so many others that LifeChurch.tv has put out will impact our world in powerful ways with the message of Jesus Christ!
My dad just sent me a link to the Flannel site which looks to be launching a new series of films with Francis Chan. If you know me well, you know the level of my man crush on Rob Bell due to the Nooma videos (and Velvet Elvis). I’ve recently developed a similar crush on Francis Chan following his book Crazy Love. I love to hear that the same folks that worked with Rob Bell are now partnering with Francis Chan to launch a new series. I can’t wait for this to come out, I’ll be the first in line to buy this new video series! Any other Francis Chan fans out there?

About 2 years ago, I got an email from Justin Graves that I could watch one of his concerts in Arkansas that would be broadcast live on the internet so I tuned in. While watching I saw the website, Mogulus.com (which is now Livestream.com), listed as the website it was being broadcast through. I checked it out and realized that I could also broadcast anything I wanted and it was FREE! Less than a week later we began broadcasting our Segue Monday night services live! I’ve often tuned into LifeChurch.tv’s online worship services, but never thought this was a realistic possibility for our ministry. We’ve never paid a penny and by simply hooking up a video camera to my laptop we broadcast ever Monday for the world to see. We have had viewers from Brazil, Japan, Germany, Kentucky, New York, and even some in San Antonio with as many as 300 on some weeks. Since experimenting with this technology, I have become more and more fascinated by the possibilities when it comes to maximizing these resources in furthering the gospel.
A few months ago, I ran across a website: StreamingChurch.tv. This service seems to be the ideal platform for any church to begin broadcasting their services online with a platform very similar to LifeChurch.tv. Whether you have 1 camera on a tripod or a multi camera switcher, this platform seems to be extremely easy to use for both the church broadcasting and the watching viewer. While this isn’t cheap ($99/month + $2.25/gig), it’s extremely affordable in comparison to other similar options. The estimated cost/service is $15/service, that’s not bad at all when you look at all that covers.
I would love to hear from anyone who is actually using StreamingChurch.tv to hear what you think. I also encourage you to check out Livestream.com and Ustream.com as FREE options to begin experimenting with this technology.
